In order to improve the shade of the dyeings, one of the following methods of treatment may be recommended: --2--3 lbs. soap per 100 gallons at 200 F. for J hour or uTveoil - 1404 F, - / 2$ soap or 3 Turkey Red Oil "m'F, - " / H soda ash or 1H olive oil - 140 F-' - f I$ starch or H pressed lard - 120 F' " ' With very hard water it is absolutely necessary to first boil up the water with soap for some length of time and then to remove the lime soap formed; otherwise dusty greyish dyeings will result. Basic dyes are also adapted for improving the shade and are very efficaciously fixed by Sulfur Black. Quantities of not more than T---ff basic dyes (such as Methylene Blue) in no wise deteriorate the fastness of the dyeings. The topping is carried out in a tepid soap-bath.
